The explorers

Each map is drawn from real coastlines. Trace the route with your finger and say out loud who sailed it, for which country, and when.

What is the difference?

Columbian Exchange vs. Triangular Trade

2 vs 3

The Columbian Exchange went two ways, between Europe and the Americas. The Triangular Trade had three legs, and only the Triangular Trade carried enslaved people.

Columbian Exchange

A two-way exchange of goods and traditions between Europe and the Americas.

  • Europe → AmericasCattle, horses, wheat, rye, smallpox
  • Americas → EuropeTobacco, potatoes, squash, cocoa, syphilis

Triangular Trade

A three-way exchange of goods, traditions, and human cargo: from the Americas to Europe to Africa and back to the Americas.

  • Americas → EuropeRaw materials: cotton, tobacco, lumber, and more
  • Europe → AfricaIron, guns, liquor
  • Africa → AmericasEnslaved Africans. This leg is called the Middle Passage, and it was the slave trade.

Questions from the guide

Culture in the Americas

What culture was created in the Americas as a result of exploration? How did Christianity play a role?

Encomienda
Like a plantation, but it used the local Native population as its source of labor. The guide says workers were paid for their work.

In practice, many Native workers were forced to work and were treated very harshly.

Missionaries
Christian missionaries tried to convert the local population to Christianity.

What were some of the consequences of the plantation system in the Americas?

Slavery
Plantations needed huge numbers of workers. As Native people died from disease (like smallpox) and overwork, plantation owners brought enslaved Africans across the Middle Passage.

What were the major empires, and where were they?
